These are the questions everyone is asking. Can a Christian be affected by a curse? Is not the blood of Y’shua enough to get rid of all curses? How do the mechanics of a curse work? Are there different types of curses? How do I get rid of curses that are upon me?

Let’s first look at the sacrifice of Y’shua on the cross and what it actually did for us.

  1. Y’shua died to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8
    1. However, we as Christians must walk this out by resisting the devil. James 4:7
  2. All things work for good for those who love Him. Romans 8:28
    1. However, we are to pray without ceasing for these things. 1 Thessalonians 5:17
  3. Everyone in Christ is a new creation. Galatians 5:24
    1. However, we are to put to death whatever belongs to our carnal nature. Colossians 3:5
  4. If we seek the Kingdom, all things will be added unto us. Matthew 6:31-33
    1. However, we are to pray daily for our bread. Matthew 6:11
  5. God supplies all our needs. Philippians 4:19
    1. However, we are to ask in order to receive. John 16:24
  6. By Christ’s stripes we are healed. 1 Peter 2:24
    1. However, if any of us are sick we are to call the elders to pray over us and anoint us. James 5:14
  7. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts. Romans 5:5
    1. However, we are to keep ourselves in the love of God. Jude 1:21
  8. All the promises are for us through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:20
    1. However, it is only through faith and patience that we inherit those promises. Hebrews 6:12

Y’shua gave us the keys to Kingdom life but His sacrifice does not make Kingdom life automatic unless we use those keys to unlock the prison doors to let us out. As I wrote that line, I saw the vision that we are in the deepest keep of a very large, imposing prison. In fact, it looks very much like an extremely large castle, but instead of reigning rulers, there are millions of prisoners within its impregnable walls. And the cells are dug even deep within the mountain that the prison is erected, and the cells are reached by endless stairs and are less than 6’ x 8’ in size. They are isolated cells intent on keeping the people separated one from another. But in the cell, there suddenly appeared a set of keys, each key opening a different lock to allow me, the prisoner, out to a different level towards freedom. The trick is, the jailers, when they find me on a different level, they oppose my escape and I must overcome them, bind them and lock them into a cell themselves. How many levels do we have to overcome? Everyone is on a different level in a different cell and so it is different for everyone.

Y’shua’ sacrifice on the cross was for our salvation, but unless we ask for the salvation, it benefits us nothing. Y’shua’ sacrifice on the cross was for our healing, but unless we ask for that healing, it benefits us nothing. Y’shua’ sacrifice on the cross redeemed us from the curse of the law, but unless we ask for that redemption, it benefits us nothing. (Galatians 3:13) He redeemed us from the curse of the law so that the blessing given to Abraham might come to us through Y’shua Christ, so that, by faith, we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

If the certainty of God’s love and his unlimited knowledge of our every need and desire does not diminish the spiritual necessity of us praying for our needs, nor even remove our obligation to keep ourselves in the love of God, on what authority can we claim that deliverance from curses other than the curse of the law requires no action on our behalf and so is utterly different from all these other aspects of receiving the benefits of Christ’s atonement? (Grantley Morris)

We certainly can lump our sins together in a general prayer of forgiveness, especially for all those sins we don’t remember we committed. The same thing can be said for generational sins. But as with sins, I believe that in everyone’s life there are generational sins that cannot be swept up in the general prayer but need to be addressed specifically.

We are at a disadvantage in this day and age in that we in North America, and perhaps Europe, have forgotten our roots and where we have come from. There was a real push to become part of a new land and new life, forgetting the history from which we stem. Because of this, many struggle with not knowing anything very much past our grandparents. So no one seems to be able to remember the tragic stories that happened 10 generations ago to great…great-grandma.

I believe this has been a tool of the enemy to keep us in bondage.

Being born again means that Y’shua died to pay the penalty of all our sins, but it does not mean that all my sins are taken care of by His death. What does this mean? It means simply that if I keep secret sins they are not covered because I have not applied the blood of Y’shua to that sin so that it is removed from my life.

“Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar, about which I tell you in advance–as I told you before–that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).

Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee, Our hidden things at the light of Thy face, Psalm 90:8

How important does God consider a secret or hidden sin? I come back to that oft mentioned couple Ananias and Sapphira (I seem to pick on them a lot) who were struck down dead where they stood because, unbeknownst to anyone else, they lied to the Holy Spirit.  Even Achan and his entire family paid the price of death for the sin that Achan had committed by burying an ingot of gold, quantity of silver and a costly garment beneath his tent. In fact, because of the sin of Achan, all Israel suffered until his sin was made came to light because of God.

Ananias and Sapphira were both born again Christians living the lives of the early church, but they were struck down because of a secret sin (Malachi 1:14). Achan was part of the chosen people who had sacrifices done for him and his household, but he was struck down because of a secret sin.

Even on judgment day there will be those who believe they are saved and doing the things of the Lord but will find out that that saying, “Lord, Lord,” is far from going to save you. Even though their works were admiral – prophesying, casting out devils, doing wonderful works – they were called workers of iniquity because their hidden sin kept them separated from doing the works of the Lord and having a relationship with Him.

Can a generational curse be the same as a secret sin?

I said previously that I believe there are 7 different generational spirits that we must all be freed from. They may have taken different paths in our lives, but the root is spelled out in the Bible. The children of Israel had to rid the Promised Land of 7 enemy tribes.

  1. Hitittes: fear
  2. Girgashites: by pass God under the pretence that there is no cost
  3. Amorites: effect the livelihood through moral compromise
  4. Canaanites: spirits that hurt others
  5. Perizzite: spirits that affect the mind
  6. Hivites: spirits that affect the family
  7. Jebusites: spirits that affect our spirit

Now, let’s look at these things in a bit of a different light. Suppose each of these were sins done by one of our ancestors and that sin has placed a curse on our generational line.

There are basically 3 types of curses found in the Bible:

  1. Generational
  2. Self-imposed
  3. Curses from people with relational authority

A Generational curse is a generational bondage of sin which moves through the family line. Curses are also often identified with ethnic heritage such as the Irish known for their drinking and tempers; Germans known for their pride; Canadians known for their apathy; etcetera.

Self-imposed curses are usually delivered via the word spoken, such as, “I can’t do anything right,” or, “I am just so stupid”. These also include vows, promises, oaths, etc.

Relational curses are caused by a parent or guardian because they have spiritual authority over us. This also includes husbands or any other person that has spiritual authority over you, such as a pastor.

Generational and self-imposed curses can come for several reasons:

  1. Anyone who does not listen to the word of God and obey it (Deuteronomy 28)
  2. Anyone who breaks any one of the 10 commandments have been broken (Deuteronomy 28)
    1. You shall have no other gods before God
    2. You shall not make yourself any carved image/idol
    3. You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain
    4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy
    5. Honor your father and mother
    6. You shall not commit murder
    7. You shall not commit adultery
    8. You shall not steal
    9. You shall not bear false witness
    10. You shall not covet
  3. The person in question curses Israel (Genesis 12:3)
  4. Anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse (Deuteronomy 21:22-23)
  5. Anyone who moves his neighbor’s boundary stone. (Deuteronomy 27:16-18)
  6. Anyone who leads the blind astray on the road. (Deuteronomy 27:17-19)
  7. Anyone who withholds justice from the alien, fatherless or widow. (Deuteronomy 27:18-20)
  8. Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal. (Deuteronomy 27:21)
  9. Anyone who commits incest with a sibling, parent or parent-in-law. (Deuteronomy 27: 19-24)
  10. Anyone who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person. (Deuteronomy 27:24-26)
  11. Anyone not helping a stranger with food and drink. (Nehemiah 13:2)
  12. Anyone who is arrogant. (Psalm 119:21)
  13. Anyone who closes his eyes to the needs of the poor. (Proverbs 28:27)
  14. Anyone who trusts in man and depends on flesh for strength. (Jeremiah 17:5)
  15. Anyone who robs God. (Malachi 3:9)
  16. Anyone who does not love the Lord. (1 Corinthians 16:22)

Only a person cursed by God can be cursed (Numbers 23:8) Although we have been redeemed from the curse of the law, the Lord writes that law on our hearts. The law is His nature because it is the ultimate do no harm guideline. To sin after salvation has been put in place is to crucify Christ all over again. (Hebrews 6:4-6)

It is interesting that there are 25 different curses listed in the Bible. 25 is the number of the Repentance.

The curses listed in Deuteronomy 28:16-68 show that a person under the curse will be

  • Humiliated
  • Barren
  • Unfruitful
  • Mentally oppressed
  • Physically oppressed
  • In poverty
  • Defeated
  • Suffers from constant failure
  • God’s disfavor on them

Alright, let’s break down the curses of Deuteronomy 28 into the 7 nations.

  1. Hitittes: fear
    1. Now suppose great…great grandpa David lived in London where he ran a lucrative business. But someone new moved to town and brought with him fierce competition for David. David was quickly losing his business profits and clients stopped favoring his shop. Torn and desperate, great…great grandpa David took out a hit on his competition. He hired a contract killer who effectively removed the competition and restored David’s business. This brought about a generational curse that manifested in a serious nature of fear within the family line.
      1. Deuteronomy 28:20: disaster, panic and frustration in everything you do.
      2. Deuteronomy 28: Filled with dread day and night, never sure of your life.
  • Deuteronomy 28:59: fearful plagues, prolonged disasters, severe and lingering illnesses.
  1. Girgashites: by pass God under the pretence that there is no cost
    1. Great…great grandpa was a preacher. He had to call to piety young in life and involved himself in church life and education early. After he was ordained pastor of his congregation, a young woman was sent by her husband to the pastor for counseling. She was sent to fulfill the proper method of dealing with issues. However, during the course of teaching her her responsibilities as a wife, the preacher succumbed to a spirit of lust and coerced her into a sexual affair. It happened shouldn’t have happened but it just felt so good – the intimacy, the release, the youthfulness once again. He would teach her first hand what a wife should do. He was a preacher and surely he was doing right…and he couldn’t stop. He brought upon his family line the curse of sexual adultery and fornication that was interwoven throughout their DNA.
      1. Deuteronomy 28:18: fruit of the womb and fruit of the ground.
      2. Deuteronomy 28:19: coming in and going out.
  • Deuteronomy 28:21: plagued with disease
  1. Deuteronomy 28:22-24: wasting disease, fever, inflammation, weather cursed, crop disease (acts of God)
  2. Deuteronomy 28:27: tumors, festering sores, itch that cannot be cured
  3. Deuteronomy 28:21: plagued with disease.
  1. Amorites: effect the livelihood through moral compromise
    1. Great…great grandpa Horatio was a businessman. He had been brought up in the way of right and wrong in every detail due to the faith of an overbearing father and faithful mother. His business enterprise had grown to its limit. He owned the largest farm in the territory, buying up smaller farms as he expanded. But farmer Johnson would not sell his farm. It was all he had to support his family; he knew nothing else. But Horatio could not rest. That small piece of land became an obsession in his mind. He was tortured with the inability of getting hold of the property. With a stroke of financial genius, he bribed an official to change the property deed of his neighbor, moving the boundaries to decrease his farm. Eventually, he forced the farmer out and seized his property for a pittance of what it was worth. He brought upon his family line a curse
      1. Deuteronomy 28:17: food provisions will be cursed.
      2. Deuteronomy 28:24: crop disease.
  • Deuteronomy 28:43-44: others will succeed while you fail.
  1. Deuteronomy 28:38-43: your efforts will be fruitless.
  2. Deuteronomy 28:47-48: in dire poverty you will serve your enemies.
  3. Deuteronomy 28:15-16: curses felt in the city and in the country (everywhere)
  1. Canaanites: spirits that hurt others
    1. Great…great grandpa Gordon was a man of God. He went to church every Sunday, he socialized with the elders and deacons. He helped the widows in their need. He gave not only his tithes but offerings to the beggars in the street. He was a man of piety and his business adventures were doing well. In fact, on the horizon, a new opportunity had arisen. He could outfit one or more of his ships to carry cargo from Nigeria and Angola, carry the cargo across to the Americas and Islands and, even at 10% loss, make a substantial profit. He broke the law of bribing someone to kidnap and murder an innocent man, woman and child. He was party to the rape, abuse and violence heaped upon these people who are loved by God and were created by God. He brought upon his family line a curse that would oppress them until removed.
      1. Deuteronomy 28:49057: national humiliation and defeat.
      2. Deuteronomy 28:33: cruel oppression all your days.
  • Deuteronomy 28:25-26: defeat before your enemies, destruction.
  1. Perizzite: spirits that affect the mind
    1. Life in the village was the same daily drudge. Nothing changed. Great…great grandma Gertrude was a pious woman. She worked hard on the farm to provide meals, clothes and care for her three children and husband. However, her husband had eyes in town for a younger woman he met at the local bar. She was a jolly wench that made him laugh and didn’t harp at him all the time about his increasing drinking habit. When Johann von Schöneburg rose to eminence in Germany, he dedicated himself, to prove his loyalty to the Jesuits, to ridding the country of Protestants, Jews and witches, in that order. Gertrude knew about the wench in town because her husband would call her the wench’s name during drunken intercourse. Gertrude saw her saw her chance and she turned to woman into the courts accused of witchcraft. The woman was tortured and finally drowned, and Gertrude’s husband returned to her. But Gertrude brought upon her family the curse of guilt, shame and madness.
      1. Deuteronomy 28:28: madness, blindness and confusion of the mind.
      2. Deuteronomy 28:65: no repose, no resting place, anxiety of mind, weary and longing heart, despairing heart.
  • Deuteronomy 28:34-35: madness and boils that cannot be cured.
  1. Hivites: spirits that affect the family
    1. Great…great grandpa Robert was an elder in the community. He was a judge in the court of law in their small town. He was feared and esteemed all at the same time by the townspeople. He walked through the town with an air about him. And when he went home, he demanded complete compliance to every whim as he was accustomed to be in control. Peoples’ lives hung on his verdicts. His wife waited on him hand and foot. His children trembled a little when he came home, that fear keeping them obedient and restrained. And in the evening, when everyone else was asleep, he moved into the bed of his daughter and molested her. He brought upon his family line the curse of incest that followed every marital relationship and family member.
      1. Deuteronomy 28:30: marriage plans destroyed.
      2. Deuteronomy 28:32: children put in bondage.
    2. Jebusites: spirits that affect our spirit
      1. Great…great grandma was a religious woman. She loved her husband and children. She went to church every Sunday. But she came from a long line of healers. Her ancestors were Celts who healed in the old ways. The knowledge was carefully guarded and passed down from mother to daughter for centuries. In the bottom of her dresser drawer, she had made little people out of straw. They were her ancestors. And every morning she would feed them with a kernel of wheat or rye so that they would not languish and suffer. She brought a curse upon her family line that was as much a part of their DNA as the color of their hair and eyes.
        1. Deuteronomy 28:37: becoming an object of scorn and ridicule.
        2. Deuteronomy 28:45: the curses will pursue you and destroy you.

Curses, unlike spirits, are subtle things. They are almost imperceptible as the laws of God are broken because so few of us really know the laws of God or give them much credence. “If it feels good, do it,” was not a saying invented in the 60s, it has always been a part of mankind’s thinking and ideology. Curses crept into our family line by a word, a deed, a dedication, a vow, an oath….

What our ancestors thought would be a blessing to help their family might actually have been a curse against them. Joining such secret societies as Free Masonry, Shriners, Order of SCIOTS, Klansman, Order of Druids, Order of Zuzimites, Knights of Pythias, Daughters of Isis, Fraternal Mystic Circle, Highland Nobles, Knights of Loyola, etc., put a curse on the family line instead of the hoped for blessing.

And the sins of a previous generation can permeate a country. During the reign of King David there was a tremendous drought. David sought the reason for the drought. To make a very long story short, the Lord told him that because Saul, who was now dead, had inflicted suffering on a pagan tribe he had broken a covenant that he himself had made with these people that had come from Joshua’s time. The result was that well into David’s reign a drought crippled the country. What happens in previous generations has spiritual impact on our current situation.

Look at your life. Are you living Kingdom life? Are you blessed beyond measure? We are in a season of repentance for the next 3 years at least. And during this time we need to search out our lives, and like David, seek the Lord as to why this curse is upon us. And then do something about it.

Other examples of curses in the Bible are:

  • Luke 11:50-51
  • Deuteronomy 23:3-4
  • Exodus 20:5
  • Genesis 9:22-27
  • Joshua 6:26
  • 1 Kings 16:34
  • 1 Samuel 2:30, 32-33, 36
  • Exodus 17:16
  • 2 Kings 5:27
  • Judges 9:57
  • Malachi 2:3

We even need to be careful of what we choose as decorations. I personally love things from other countries. I used to gather things from old cultures as somehow it seemed to make me connected. I collected Zuni carvings but soon had to give them all up. I collected masks, but again had to get rid of them. Even the Amish have talismans we buy as cute paintings to hang over doors or in kitchens. We need to be careful what gods, charms, amulets, talismans, etc. we allow into our home. What today is so accepted as part of art is in Kingdom life condemned and cursed.

  • Ezekiel 13:18
  • Deuteronomy 7:25-26
  • Isaiah 27:9
  • Acts 19:18-20
  • Psalms 58:3
  • Numbers 14:18
  • Exodus 20:4-6
  • Numbers 30:7
  • Psalms 89:34
  • Ecclesiastes 5:5-6
  • Numbers 30:1-2
  • Proverbs 26:2
  • Joshua 7:1, 3, 25
  • Deuteronomy 7:26
  • Jeremiah 32:16-18

So how do we get rid of all these things? How do we break free?

Generational curses are easily broken once they are realized. All you need do is seek the Lord, repent, renounce and fall out of agreement with them, breaking their power and cancelling their assignment in your life. Repent for the sins of your ancestors (you have the list above). Place all the generational sins under the blood of Y’shua, which does not free them, but it does free you from their effects. Then break the curse in the name of Y’shua – I break the curse of death over me in the name of Y’shua and speak life where there was death. I break the curse of poverty over me in the name of Y’shua and speak abundance where there was lack. Etcetera. You have the list of all the curses listed above or you can find them in Deuteronomy 27 and 28. Repent, renounce and fall out of agreement with all the sins even generationally, break off the curses and proclaim the blessings in the name of Y’shua. Be detailed. Be precise. Be thorough.

Get rid of cursed objects. Such spiritual pollution can cause such things as:

  • Continual bad dreams and nightmares
  • Insomnia
  • Behavioral problems
  • Relational problems such as fighting and arguments
  • Lack of peace
  • Restless, disturbed children
  • Unexplained, ongoing illness and bondage
  • Seeing demonic apparitions
  • Foul, unexplained odors
  • A spirit of heaviness in the house

Some examples of cursed objects are:

  • Ouija boards, four-leaf clovers, charm bracelets, stuffed animals, statues or pictures such as dragons, unicorns, wizards, etcetera
  • Demonic charms or games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Dracula’s Revenge, Isis & Osiris, Dark Tower, Magic: The Gathering, Harry Potter: Mystery at Hogwarts, etcetera
  • Artifacts of Buddha, Hindu or Eastern cults
  • Artifacts, pictures or books on astrology, horoscope, etcetera
  • Materials from or related to Shriners, Free Masonry, Unity Church, etcetera
  • Movies with occult or supernatural messages
  • Items related to sin in our lives such as pornography
  • Statues, pictures, stuffed dolls of angels (Exodus 20:4) (Doesn’t matter that you might think them holy because they are spoken of in the Bible)
  • Pictures, statues, necklaces, etcetera of Y’shua, Mary, saints or people (Exodus 20:4) (These are just artist renderings from their imaginations and are in essence, idols who are no more holy than an idol to Diane because it is given the name of Y’shua)

Get rid of these cursed items. Get them out of your house. Apply the blood of Y’shua to not only the area, but the room and the whole house because of the spiritual impact the article had on the home and people in the home…as well as those who passed through the home. Break the power of the curse, cancel its assignment in your house (you will know from experience what curse is upon you) in the name of Y’shua and proclaim the blessings in the name of Y’shua.
